Continuing our Best Friend’s Day theme, I’m taking a look at some of my favorite movie and TV shows that are pro-friendship. I’m not sure I would watch two hours of general grumpiness, anyway. These picks feature womanly friendships.
Passion Fish
One of my all-time favorite movies; the landscape of rural Louisiana and the bayou are lovely. The acting by Mary McDonnell, Alfre Woodard and David Straithairn is wonderful and I now want to watch it again immediately!
Steel Magnolias
You can take your pick of favorite friendships in this one but I think I’ll have to stick with Ouisser and Clairee. Why rock the boat?
Gilmore Girls
So I’m actually not referring to the relationship between Lorelai and Rory, but to Lorelai and Sookie. Sookie, played by the fabulous Melissa McCarthy, is exactly who you want as your best friend. She’s incredibly supportive but knows when to call Lorelai out (like when she’s heading for a neurotic tailspin). She also seriously rocks the pigtails.
Sex and the City
So I’m not sure how to create this list without adding this quintessential chick flick. I was a fan from the beginning and have to admit I still love it and can’t wait to see Sex and the City 2.
Thelma & Louise
My love for Susan Sarandon is almost endless and she doesn’t disappoint in this classic.
Fried Green Tomatoes
Another must-have movie on any best friend list, but this one holds up over time. Jessica Tandy is charming as the storyteller who weaves everything together.
Bonneville
This one was recommended to me based on a few movies I added to my Queue, and it was right on target. It’s a sweet film of friendship and loss with a road trip. Can’t go wrong with a road trip thrown in.
Lipstick Jungle
That’s right, I have no entertainment shame! I’m also addicted to most of the Real Housewives franchises but let’s just keep that between us.
Practical Magic
I know they’re sisters but they are still best friends so I’m totally including it in my list! I love the mix of mystery, romance and magic.
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
It has a great cast including the awesome Maggie Smith, who I’m fairly certain I would watch read a phone book.

I LOVE Steel Magnolias!
