Cowboys and Aliens

2011 Movie Preview

As a public service, I’ve gone through the first couple hundred entries in IMDB’s list of the most popular movies releasing next year and pulled out the ones I think look most promising.

Cowboys & Aliens
I’ll admit that when I first heard about this movie (before any actors were attached), I got the feeling it might be horrible. Visions of Wild Wild West were all I could summon up. But after the first trailer was blasted around the internet, I got really excited about watching Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford as cowboys fighting aliens in 1873. This should be one of the coolest flicks of the summer.

The Hangover Part II
I don’t know much about the plot, but I do know it’s the same cast, and it’s set in Thailand. Sold.

Your Highness

The comedy/fantasy plot might not work with just any cast, but with Danny McBride, Natalie Portman, James Franco and Zooey Deschanel, I have high hopes. Pardon the pun.

Limitless
I’m really only including this because the protagonist is a copywriter (like me!) who takes a drug that gives him superpowers (a little less like me!).

The Muppets
A new Muppet movie written by Jason Segel? Yes, please. The only bad part is that we’ll have to wait until late November to see it.

On the Road
Loved the book, but I’m a little afraid of what the movie might do to it. I’ll definitely give it a try, though.

Paul
I had this alien buddy comedy by the brilliant minds behind Spaced on my 2010 movie preview, so something has obviously gone awry. But Paul is now slated for a spring release; here’s hoping we’ll get to see it soon.

The Rum Diary

I’m a big fan of Hunter S. Thompson, and can’t wait to see him portrayed again on the screen by his good friend Johnny Depp.

Source Code
It’s a mind-bending tale about a soldier tasked with finding a terrorist. OR IS IT?!? I’m not really sure, but it’s directed by Duncan Jones, whose first offering was the excellent indie sci-fi film Moon.

Sucker Punch
Say what you will about Zack Snyder, but his movies rarely fail in the stunning visuals department (that would be an awesome name for an actual department at a film studio). That alone should be enough reason to check out this movie about a young girl’s alternate reality.

What movies are you most looking forward to in the new year?
