When Harry Met Sally

Best New Year’s Eve Scenes

The end of the year is upon us. And while we make the most of it in those last few hours of 2010, let’s reminisce on the movies with the most unforgettable New Year’s Eve scenes. Here are my picks:

200 Cigarettes
This movie makes the top five because it’s entirely dedicated to that one magical night — New Year’s Eve. Set in 1981, Monica hosts a NYE party and struggles to keep it together as her friends wend their way through New York City in route to her soiree. The all-star cast of the 90s alone, including Janeane Garofalo, Ben Affleck and Christina Ricci, make it a must-watch.

Sunset Boulevard
You don’t need to wait for any special occasion to watch this movie, but it does include a pretty creepy NYE scene that makes it so memorable. Norma Desmond, played by Gloria Swanson, throws a lavish party, complete with an orchestra, fancy foods and expensive champagne, for herself and one ill-fated houseguest.

When Harry Met Sally
When you talk about NYE scenes, well you just have to include this one. On New Year’s Eve, Harry confesses to Sally that he loves her, and we all love him for doing it so brilliantly. Everything is perfect about this scene — the excellent dialogue; the chemistry between the two; the way it seems like it’s just Harry and Sally but then the camera zooms out and shows them actually surrounded by a crowded dance floor. I can’t express it enough — you have to watch this movie!

About a Boy
This one is kind of a stretch, but the NYE scene is really important…and not because we all must learn about East Coast versus West Coast rap, but because it’s the one pivotal moment when Will meets the woman that changes his life — Rachel. And you just feel really happy for Will because he actually admits to a woman that he does nothing for a living — and she’s OK with that.

Bridget Jones’s Diary
This movie starts off on New Year’s Day — 1/1, just a few hours past NYE. The scene: a turkey curry dinner party hosted by Bridget’s parents’ friends. Bridget, a self-described spinster wearing a self-described carpet, jabbers on at a first meeting with super-serious Mark Darcy. We realize, through the movie, that Bridget isn’t just a hot mess when meeting men, but a hot mess always.
