Rent By Mail Without a Subscription — Try it Free!

We’ve been offering movie and game rentals by mail for years now through Blockbuster By Mail. But some of you out there are massive commitment-phobes. Seems like you don’t want to have a monthly subscription. But you DO want to rent movies and games by mail.

Why does commitment scare you so much? What are you afraid of? Why can’t you just find a nice man/woman and settle down??? I don’t know. But it doesn’t matter, because now you don’t need a subscription to rent movies and games by mail from Blockbuster. And you can try it free by using the promo code “summer” when you rent a movie!

Here’s how it works:
1) You search for a movie or game you want on blockbuster.com, then choose the 7-Day Rental option (shown above)
2) We’ll mail it out as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours
3) You have 7 days from the day you receive the rental to ship it back to us or return it to a participating store
4) There is no step 4. That’s it. I just like even numbers. No, YOU have OCD!

You can find specifics on how to rent on our website. When you place your first movie order, make sure to enter the promo code “summer” to get the rental free. You’ll only get one free rental per account, so make it a good one. The code is good through 7/31/11.

Then you can tweet to @blockbuster and let us know how you liked it.

  1. Please tell me this is a joke. I think my 6 yr. old could run a company better than this…..

  2. I thought RIM had the most clueless management team. Looks like I was wrong.

Why would anyone use a service that that only differentiates from it’s competition by being more expensive?

  3. Huh, you charge $2.00 more online at than at the store. So what if you can keep it for 30 days if you have to finish it in 24 hours after you start it.

I’d still rather go browse a video store and rent live than commit, rent by mail or rent online.

It was a social activity and the kids int he store are always friendly, even if they are pissed because you didn’t bring back a video on time.

My gosh how much has this site, your servers and your subscription services cost you per day, compared to the treats and videos I could get at your stores. At least there we knew we were helping our local economies.

Where the hell is my Netflix pin?

  4. Unbelievable!
For a moment I thought this was the answer to the Netflix price adjustment but when I read the fine print it was more like a joke.

The outrageous fees is what brought you down from the lead in home DVD entertainment… Did you guys not learn anything??? With ideas like this you deserve to go bankrupt…

  5. Unbelievable!!!!!
Is this company thinking that we are retards???!!!Where is the benefit of paying $4.00 a movie? Even if I am a day late I’ll be paying less than that every where else and even at a BBusters’ store!!!!!
Also, I looked for an older movie (of 20 years ago) in their website and it was at the same price!!!!! I have seen this movie in other places for $.50cents!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. @Blockbuster – This is a GREAT time for you to revamp your movie-by-mail subscription and also offer direct streaming. Netflix is raising their prices 60% and lots of customers are very unhappy and are canceling their subscriptions. The key is, don’t be greedy and offer DVD’s and streaming video at a decent price and you will gain all of Netflix’s old customer base. This is the time. Most people won’t pay more than $10 AND also offer current releases which Netflix does not!

  7. I AM a Netflix customer and was thinking of switching to Blockbuster due to the increase Netflix will have. But for what Blockbuster requires, I’m better off w/staying with NF even though Blockbuster offers games.
Hey BB my advice: Take NF’s ideas they have of no late fees and keep movies as long as you want, unlimited streaming movies (add unlimited streaming games), keep prices low and more people would probably subscribe..I would! Plus more money would be made this way as you’re beating competitors and more people would be joining which would create more business for you!

  8. I’m disappointed too.
Just got the price raise notice from Netflix and wanted to come back- but no streaming? “On Demand” for $3.99 a pop when UNLIMITED streaming on Netflix has been free? (until now, and starting Sept. it will be $7.99/mo; so for the cost of 2 movies at Blockhead you can get a full MONTH of streaming at Netflix.)
So I guess I won’t be coming back after all.
As CS above said, “…don’t be greedy…”

  9. same story as above. upset with netflix and thought this might be the answer, but nope – paying for streaming and dealing with legal jargon and fees. if you have any chance of coming back as a legitimate contender, keep your price point of 11.99, add streaming and make it customer-centric (read: drop the legal crud/hidden fees)

  10. Blockbuster needs to grab the bull by the horns, we’re rooting for you to do so, we wish you would, but you have to offer something more than this. Make it $15.00/mo for access to everything, and it doesn’t take long to figure $15*12months*15 Million subscribers = $270 Million/Yr.
    Just a thought.

  11. Make it free as a public service. Free downloads of all movies to keep forever. That would be right and just. And repeal all copywrong laws!

  12. I think it’s odd how revitalizing this company is right in front of their eyes and they don’t even see it.

I decided to look at the trial due to what was being advertised because I seriously considering getting rid of Netflix.

One single monthly fee for unlimited movies, games, by mail or by store whether it is one disc, two disc, or three disc would decide the price.

Get rid of the new release delays on the ‘by mail’ service. No late fees. No catches.

People want STRAIGHTFORWARD service. They don’t want to feel like there might be a catch to something. Discounted trade-ins for games? No. Get rid of it.

I’m guessing you guys are already working an online streaming service like Netflix, but it HAS to be up to par and not serve up short.

As of now though, I refuse to stay after the trial is up because the advertisement is misleading on the ‘games by mail’ and you guys know it. You gave me no real reason to leave Netflix, just more reasons to stay away.

  13. I was just reading comments although this is months later. Guess there is still no resolution, if not its worse. They have streaming but with limited devices. BB’s movies by mail has started taking so long that I can get my movies via Redbox or Netflix or regular TV before movies come to me via mail that have been in my queue since they were in theaters. That’s ridiculous! Guess its time to say bye to years of dedication to my once loved BB…. SHAME!
Blockbuster??? There’s been many complaints an I’m sure a loss of business ~ ANY ONE LISTENING?
