Top Five Shark Movies

Jaws

“Live every week like it’s Shark Week.” — Tracy Jordan

Shark Week Shark Fact: Sharks are the coolest. Oh, how I love Shark Week. It’s one of my favorite times of the year — a full week dedicated to the wonderful, toothy majesty of the most awesome predator on the planet. So in celebration of this joyous season, I present to you my top five shark movies. It would have been more, but I think putting all the Jaws movies in there is cheating. Also, some are legitimately horrible. Read More

(Dysfunctional) Family Movies

Little Miss Sunshine

July is National Family Reunion Month (who decides these things, anyway?), so I’m highlighting a few of my favorite dysfunctional movie families. I find these to be much more realistic than many fictional families like The Cleavers. They’re the kind of people who would show up at my family reunion: criminals, weirdos, misanthropes, etc. Read More

Movies for Mad Men Fans

Mad Men

I refuse to use the term “Maddicts.” Even though I just did. Anyway, Mad Men fever is sweeping the nation! And why not? The show is a look back at a simpler time, when it was cool to smoke on airplanes, get blitzed at work, womanize, and generally be kind of a jerkface.

I’ve always loved the culture of late 50s/early 60s America, and Mad Men does an excellent job of capturing it. I mean, as far as I can tell — I wasn’t alive. If you’re a fan of Mad Men and the time in which it’s set, you’ll probably like these movies from the same era. Read More

My Comic-Con Experiences: Part 3 — The Fan Factor

Amidst all of the ever-changing panels, presentations and special guests year over year at Comic-Con, the only element that remains constant and ever-present is the slew of dedicated, junk-food-fueled fans that attend.

As mentioned in a previous blog, I consider myself to be a pretty big fan of all things sci-fi, fantasy and horror. I’ve got original posters for films such as Empire of the Ants, The Dark Crystal, The Evil Dead (signed by Bruce Campbell!), John Carpenter’s The Thing (signed by John Carpenter!), etc. I even have copies of the film 12 Monkeys on every format it was released, including both laserdisc versions. When visiting conventions, I make it a point to wear shirts with fake companies from films, such as OCP (the Robocop franchise), Cyberdyne Systems (the Terminator franchise) and Weyland Industries (the Alien franchise). I could mention much more, but it’s probably best to stop there. Read More

My Comic-Con Experiences: Part 2 of 3 — The Celebrity Edition

One of the more amazing elements of San Diego Comic-Con is that, thanks to the broad number of talented guests in attendance, the average attendee never knows who he/she may have a chance encounter with.

Most who have heard of the con are aware of the number of big names present for some of the massive presentations given in areas such as Hall H. However, many of those who have yet to attend may not know there are usually a great number of well-known persons who do regular meet and greets/signings during the show. Read More

My Comic-Con Experiences: Part 1 of 3

Editor’s Note: Since Comic-Con starts next week, I asked Trey Murphy, an Assistant Product Buyer for Blockbuster and a Comic-Con veteran, to share some of his con experiences.

The word “epic” is thrown around quite often these days. Most of the time, it’s correctly used to describe something massively large, grand and/or almost incomprehensibly huge. For example: the Lord of the Rings trilogy, footage of the Hindenburg disaster, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 A Space Odyssey, the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium and the ego of any basketball star who feels the need to take an hour of primetime to announce what team he’ll be playing for next season can all be described as nothing shy of epic.

However, when it comes to describing San Diego Comic-Con, the word “epic” isn’t quite epic enough. Read More
