Greatest Superhero Movies and Why They’re Important to the Genre

Another summer of chock full of superhero movies began recently with the release of Iron Man 3.  This will be followed up over the next few months with comic-based films The Wolverine, Man of Steel, and Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall.  As a bonus, the year rounds out with the release of the Thor sequel Thor: The Dark World in November.

Superhero films are big business these days and are seemingly now a staple of the summer movie lineup, so this week we want to take a look at some of our favorite superhero films and more importantly, why they were important to the genre.

X-Men

Let’s be honest here, the original X-Men film really wasn’t all x-menthat great as far as storylines go.  It was primarily carried by special effects and the wonder of seeing some of our favorite superheroes finally portrayed well in a live-action film.  But back in 2000, X-Men kicked off the current superhero movie craze because it had crisp writing and acting and showed that movie special effects had finally gotten to the point where they could make super powers look good.

While there had been successful superhero films before like the Superman films of the 80s and the Batman films of the 90s, they were a bit campy and not really produced by comic book lovers for comic book fan boys.  X-Men proved that superhero films could be big hits that dropped the campiness and appealed to mass audiences, paving the way for 13 more years (and counting) of nerd-driven films.

X-2: X-Men United

When X-2 came out in 2003, it gave superhero films a precedent that would be last for at least a decade: it gave us a superhero sequel that was leagues better than the original, basically improving on every aspect of the first film.  Now, every superhero film, regardless of how much money it makes, plans on continuing the story with a sequel in not many sequels.  Most films actually end with bonus scenes that hint at what comes in the next film.  Also, while X-Men: First Class was incredibly enjoyable, we still think X-2 is the flagship X-Men storyline and film of the series so far.  No X movie has weaved it characters and comic book roots together in one great film quite like X-2 did.

And this is still one of the greatest opening scenes of any superhero movie ever.

Iron Man

After the success of the X-Men and Spider-Man films, superhero movies started to draw some bigger names to star in them.  The shining example of this is Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr.  Downey Jr. showed us that we could have just as much fun watching a superhero when he’s out of his costume as we did when he was all suited up.

Additionally, Iron Man proved that when done properly, even heroes that were not as well-known outside of the comic book community could be a huge success.  Put another way, without the foundation and success of Iron Man, we never would have gotten The Avengers film.

Spider-Man 2

For the record, Spider-Man 2 is a fantastic film!  It took a popular storyline familiar to comic book fans and translated it perfectly for Read More

2012′s Top Movie Rentals and Why We Loved Them – Part 1

Well, another year has come and gone and once again Hollywood has done its best to outdo the previous year.  Fortunately for movie fans, 2012 did not disappoint (well, that’s not entirely true).

Here at Blockbuster, we see a unique side of the movie industry, the movie rental side.  Sometimes a movie performs poorly in theaters, but has a great run as a video rental.  Sometimes a movie does great at the theaters and then continues to dominate as a rental too.  Either way we’ve listed the top DVD/Blu-ray rentals from 2012 with our favorite moments from each film.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a great example of the so-so theatrical run turned to rental gold.  Sometimes, a movie just isn’t worth paying $10+ per person to see, but to split a $3 rental between a group of friends…sure!

Why we liked it: It’s a reinvented President Lincoln that hunts the undead and is an amazing fighter! What’s not to like?

Our favorite moment: The first time you see Honest Abe wield that silver ax of his and take care of business Quentin Tarantino style.

The Expendables 2

The original Expendables movie proved that just because action stars get old, doesn’t mean that people won’t go pay to see them.  The Expendables 2 upped the ante and brought in even more old men to deliver the punches to the world’s bad guys.

Why we like it: Well, obviously, this film franchise rides on the star-power of its overloaded cast.  But it’s pretty hard to not enjoy a Read More

10. Snow White and the Huntsman

The enchanting Snow White (Kristen Stewart) joins forces with the fierce Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), who was recruited by the diabolical Queen (Charlize Theron) to kill the fair beauty, and together they fight to rid their kingdom of evil in this bold new take on the fairy-tale classic from commercial director Rupert Sanders. Obsessed with being the fairest woman in the land, the Queen learns that Snow White will soon surpass her in beauty, and seeks to achieve immortality by consuming the young girl’s heart. But the Huntsman is the only one capable of braving the dark forest to seek out Snow White. Threatened with death should he refuse to follow his order, the Huntsman finds Snow White, and begins training her for the arduous battle ahead. Meanwhile, a handsome prince (Sam Claflin) falls hopelessly under Snow White’s spell.

9. The Avengers

Marvel Studios delivers the ultimate comic-book film, which ties together such characters as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) for a big-screen franchise team-up like no other. Taking center stage this time is Nick Fury (played once again by the note-perfect Samuel L. Jackson), leader of the peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury, along with former Russian spy Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), recruits a super team to combat Thor’s ever-deceptive brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) after he brainwashes ace archer Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) while stealing a cosmic cube from an underground base. Thus the heroes must learn to work together alongside outlaw scientist Bruce Banner (Ruffalo), who can track down the artifact’s gamma signals when he’s not hulking out into a giant green monster.

8. Rock of Ages

A small-town girl and a big-city boy find their fates intersecting on the Sunset Strip, riding a wave of romance through the height of the “hair metal” scene as the off-Broadway musical rocks its way to the big screen courtesy of choreographer-turned-director Adam Shankman (A Walk to Remember, Hairspray). Arriving in Hollywood with stars in her eyes, Sherrie (Julianne Hough) meets Drew (Diego Boneta), and together they plunge headlong into the local rock scene. Meanwhile, as Sherrie struggles to stay afloat in a churning sea of rock ‘n’ roll excess, she gets swept off her feet by audacious rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise).
