Gotta Get Back In Tiiiiime

BlogImage-200x150_BackInTime

No, this isn’t a Huey Lewis and the News retrospective. That’s next week. This is a post on movies about time/time travel, in honor of Groundhog Day. Because Groundhog Day is pretty much a worthless holiday, the only thing that comes to mind when I think about it is the Bill Murray movie from way back in 1993.

So instead of movies about weather-prognosticating marmots, I present some of my favorite movies about time and time travel.

Groundhog Day

The inspiration for this list, as well as a pretty funny movie (because Bill Murray is a comic genius). Although it does get a bit depressing. Fun Groundhog Fact: they are also known as whistle-pigs and land-beavers. All of a sudden, groundhog doesn’t seem like that ridiculous of a name.

Back to the Future
Love this movie, but I’m still waiting for my hoverboard.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
I know I’ll be roundly mocked by the nerd community for saying this, but I’m stating for the record that this is my favorite Star Trek movie. Yes, the one with the whales.

Time Bandits
The plot centers on a group of little people from another dimension who pop out of a “time hole” in a boy’s closet and bring him along on their journey through time/space. This will also be featured on a List of Movies that Sound Really Creepy When You Describe Them.

Run Lola Run
This one’s really about time rather than time travel. Germans make whacky films, gang.

12 Monkeys
Speaking of whacky films, 12 Monkeys is really weird, but enjoyable. Did you know it was directed by Terry Gilliam (of Monty Python)? It only took me 15 years to find that out. Thanks, internet!

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

“Be excellent to each other” is a philosophy even So-crates himself could get behind. Also, this history report is one of my favorite movie quotes ever: “Everything is different, but the same… things are more moderner than before… bigger, and yet smaller… it’s computers… San Dimas High School football rules!”

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Time travel AND robots!!!

Idiocracy
There are a lot of reasons to watch this movie, which I find to be pretty underrated. But the most compelling reason is President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho. He is a great leader and a great man.

Army of Darkness
Why yes, I did just mention this in my Movies to Get Snowed In With post. I like the fact that Ash has a chemistry book in his car when he travels back in time, so he can make weapons with “alloys and compositions and things with… molecular structures.”
